MS Graph appears in a separate window-can't place in my document?

When I select Insert/Picture/Chart a new window opens and allows me to create
the chart using the data sheet. I have a class of 25 computers and the other
computers do not show the chart in a separate window and they are able to
click in the document and it inserts the chart. Mine however will not insert
the chart. I do have a choice under File that says Exit and return to
document, but it does not insert the chart. I have another command that says
Update, but I can't tell that it does anything either. I have uninstalled and
then reinstalled MS Office, but I still have the same problems. I am doing a
Custom install and running everything from my computer except Outlook.
Help please - I am using MS Office 2003.

There are a number of things that can cause this

1. Field codes are set to display instead of field results (Tools/Options/View)

2. Insufficient resources to support in-place editing

3. Being in the Normal or Outline view

I'm inclined to suspect (3), given that you're not seeing the result of your
work. If the Chart is inserting with text-flow formatting, it wouldn't be
visible in either of these views, only in the Print Layout.
