MS Office Project has stopped working error message

JulieS

Hello Dushan,

Glad to hear that turning off the Office Plug-in worked. There has
long been a problem with the Norton plug-in and Office files -- not
just Project but Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

See the Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329820

There are also a number of articles on Symantec's (Norton's) website
with reported problems and instructions on disabling the plug-in.

A quick search of google returns over 100,000 hits.

I'm very glad DougF mentioned the issue -- I just **assumed** most
people would have that option long since disabled -- not for
Project but for the other programs.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi; I had this problem and spent a couple hours this morning trying to
figure out what happened. Project Standard, SP1, XP OS. Following the
advise in this thread, I deselected the Office Plug-in from Norton. All
works well now. Thanks for your help!

Julie,
Thanks for providing lead to the KnowledgeBase article. Interesting that the
article advises (article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329820 ) about the
problem of conflict between NORTON and MICROSOFT but states nothing about
resolving the conflict by having two companies working together. The article
was updated 5/2007 that means now 10/2008, a year and the half later, nothing
was resolved.
Not a good policy on both sides.

Hi Everyone,

Glad to have this problem sorted out. As Julie mentioned we have ha
problems in the past with Norton and Office. To resolve this, we woul
need someone who is a registered user with Norton to log a bug on this

Unfortunately I could not repro this because I do not have the licens
to run Norton's AV.

I got the wonderful news this morning that Melissa is able to open he
files, and many posters thereof.

Dushan, I don't know why it causes problem with MS Project
Unfortunately we do not have the ability to know why Norton behaves thi
way when downloading/installing Office-plug.

Hi Safinaaz and Julie; Thanks for your help. As a NAV user, I sent Norton
email support the following message:

Hi, On Oct. 6/08 my Microsoft Project software started crashing every time
I opened a file. When I turn off the NAV Windows Office plug-in, this
problem stops. If you will check the Windows Office Online Office Discussion
Group for Microsoft Project, you will see this is a common problem starting
about Oct. 1/08. I expect I speak for many users when I say that we require
a solution that permits using the Office plug-in and MS Project at the same
time.
Thanks,
Bill
