recommend against Gant software package (which is cheaper than MS Project),
but I want to enphasize technical advantages

Eduard,
I'm not familiar with Gantt software package but the fact this it is
cheaper than Project most likely means that it doesn't have near the
capability. Further, Project is Microsoft based and therefore has a very
large support and user base, including this newsgroup.

I guess it all depends on what functionality you need. If you only need
very basic Gantt chart capability then perhaps the Gantt software
package makes sense for you.

If you would like an opinion, you will need to post the name of a specific
software package and perhaps a weblink if possible. "Gantt Software" is as
generic as saying you want to purchase a vehicle (car, van, pickup truck,
motorcycle, bus...).

Off hand, MS Project has the advantage of interoperability with the MS
Office Suite of software. Howerver, I can think of two other packages
immediately that also offer that feature.

Also, even though this is a Microsoft sponsored forum, you need to make your
software selection based on requirements not brand names. So, understand
your requirements, evaluate some packages, and post up here if you have any
questions about the comparison of features as related to your requirements.
That said, MS Project is extremely popular and not prohibitively
expensive.... it certainly has paid me well to be good with the tool.

You 're right. Usually what is cheaper is less than something you pay more.
Still, sometimes you might pay too much for useless functionality. I agree
with you that a MS application will be easier to interact with other MS
packages.

Anyhow, the package I am talking about is GanttProject:

As mentioned, earlier,if anyone has knowledge of this package and can give
here a comparison with MS Project, I will appreciate that.

Why do you WANT to recommend Project and why is this software the only
alternative you are considering?

You could actually download it and start using it as the license appears
to be pretty unrestrictive (you can also download a trial copy of
Project if you don't have it but that will be feature limited).

One approach you could adopt would be to start using the Gant package
and see what its shortfalls are. As they claim their files are
compatible with Project you have a direct migration route should you
wish to change. You could actually use them in parallel for a side by
side comparison if you wanted.

One 'hidden' aspect you might like to consider is the support you might
receive. You can see from this group and other related ones that there
are dozens of requests for assistance per day and there is a large body
of users assisting with those. You might find that that is not the case
with less well known packages.
