MS Word: Ruler option in View menu is greyed out

The document ruler is missing. Under the view option, "Ruler" is unchecked
and greyed out, not allowing my to select Ruler.

How can I un-grey the option or otherwise get the ruler back.

This happens in all documents, not just one.

Check what View you are in. The ruler does not operate in Outline or Reading
Layout.
