[Assignment Incomplete]

As he was doing his homework, my son was saving his story as he went along.
On the final save, he probably deleted the entire file and now has an empty
page.

Is there any way for us to recover the previous versions, before the final
'delete'?

If the file is still open, click on Undo.

If you have "Automatically create backup copy" checked on the Save tab of
Tools | Options, then display All Files in the File Open dialog and look in
the same folder for a "Backup of <filename>.wbk" file, which will be the
previous version.
