mscal.ocx unable to register after uninstalling Office 2007 trial

My computer operating system is XP and I've had Office 97 installed and
working perfectly for over a year. I installed the Office 2007 trial
recently, but after the trial period expired I decided that Office 97 was
satisfactory, so I uninstalled the Office 2007 software.

However, after doing this, Access 97 stopped recognising standard date
functions like date(). I tried uninstalling Office 97, but I received an
error message saying that mscal.ocx was unable to register itself in the
registry. I then tried re-installing it, but had the same problem. I spent
hours searching on the internet and trying different solutions but nothing
has helped.

I realise that mscal.ocx has something to do with Access Calendar Control,
so I've been able to reinstall Office 97 without it. But I'm back with my
original problem - Access doesn't function like it did before and still
doesn't recognise date().

I suspect that uninstalling the Office 2007 trial removed something that is
causing this mscal.ocx problem - can anyone please help? I don't want to
reformat my whole computer again, but at this stage it looks like my only
option.
