Multi-value custom field

René

From what I read, the feature to define multi-value in a custom fields only
exist if we use the server environment. Why?
Is thereb a way to define multi-value for one resource custom field without
using the server environment?
I want to be able to report (Resource usage view) on a multi-value field for
projects.
Thanks.

The "why" can only be answered by Microsoft which we here are not.

"What" are you trying to do? Please elaborate on what you mean by
"multi-value" field?

We can only guess why it is only available in the server. It could be
something to do with it being too much trouble to retrofit it into the
existing project code - yet possible to do easily with a database, or maybe
there is some other sort of reason.

But in any case, that is the way it is.
Sorry if that is not helpful in solving your problem, but I hope it will
keep you from spending time looking for a way to get it working.

You are correct. Multi-value (MV) fields are only available if you are
using Project Server 2003 or 2007. Why, I know not. Thus, there is no way
to create a multi-value field using only the Microsoft Project desktop
application. One way to work around this is to create a series of custom
fields, all of which share a common Lookup Table, and then you can select a
value from each field as needed. Then you report on the multiple fields
instead. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
What I want to do is exactly what this feature provides with the server.
Like the ability to report (view) works based on multiple skills associated
on each resources.
But, from I understand, it is what it is. Maybe I should transfer works pers
resources in excel and use excel pivot table to report the way I want...

OK, now how can I use "group by" when we have multiple fields? I need to
roll-up (group) the information by these custom fields.

Hi, I will use the exemple from the book: If we have for each of our
resources defined in the projet, multiple-skills associated. I need a way to
report (resource usage view) the total work based on each skills. The only
easy way is to have what we call Multi-Value fields.
Do you see any other way to do it without this feature?

Well, grouping won't work very well with multiple fields to track your
resource skills data. Sorry.

Project Standard/pros has no way to report work based on each resource,
but it does not to my knowledge have the ability to abstract that that
to the skill level. Maybe with some VBA-based code.
