multiple copies of each email

MS Outlook 2003 on xp sp2 machine and dial up connection downloads emails
ok but if I ask it to check for new emails a few minutes later it
redownloads the last lot so that I end up with multiple copies of each
email. This takes some time and bandwidth if I haven't been online for a
week or so. Is there a setting in outlook to change to fix this problem?
