multiple skills for resources

Hi,

We are currently trying to set up a resource pool where each resource
can have multiple skills and that resource can be substiuted into a new
project based on one or more of these skills.
For example, if we have 10 resources who are application developers we
have them captured under the title "app developer," but each has
expertise in different applications and we want to capture that as well
and be able to search for these resources based on 1 or more of the
applications they have experience with.

1. Is this set up possible?
2. Does anyone have a template of a skill set heirarchy that can be
used as a guide for setting this up?

Hi NYC PM,

You can use a couple of approaches to capture skill set information. You
could use one (or several) of the spare Text fields and manually type in the
skills. You could further refine the Text field, by adding a value list
that would allow users to just select the skill set from a list.
(Tools>Customize> Fields.)

You could also use one (or several) of the Resource Outline Code fields and
define a code mask to make the grouping of skills easier. For example you
could have a top level skill "Application Developer" then the next level in
the mask could be the listing the specific application name they develop.
The outline codes also generate lists that a user selects from.

However, neither method will help you substitute one resource for another
(although I believe Project Server has some capabilities here.)

You can however create custom filters using either the Text or Outline Code
fields for the resources that you could then use in the Assign Resources
dialog box to filter the list of resources. [Note: I don't believe this is
available in Project 2000, only 2002 & 2003.)

As far as a template of skill sets, I would say that is really going to be
based upon your projects and your resources.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

This actually helps a lot. Thank you! One more question:

In Project Server, when substituting one resource for another, can you
search adn substitute based on multiple fields? For example, if our
application has expertise is 3 different types of apps, can we search
for another app developer based on 2 of these areas rather than for a
developer in general?

Hi NYC PM,

Glad to have helped and thanks for the feedback.

Concerning the resource substitution using Project Server, I'm afraid I
haven't worked extensively with the latest release of Server. You may want
to ask that question in the ng for Project server.

Try posting to:
