My custom animations are not transitions properly. Sometimes I have to click
several times for the slide to progress.

What version of PowerPoint are you using?
For PowerPoint 2000 and below,
Go to Custom Animation,
Then click Order and Timing tab.
Under Start Animation, select Automatically.

For PowerPoint 2002/XP and above,
Go to Custom Animation,
Set the Start: "On Click" to "After Previous".
