My Office Xp, Windows Xp locked up at startup. I had to reinstall.

Office Xp and Windows Xp and reformat my hard drive.

I was successful on reinstalling Xp and Office. Or at least I thought I was.
Windows Xp works fine, but if I try to open Outlook or Excel (etc.) and I get
an error message. The message directs me to enter my product key. When I do
that I get error message 1608 "set up was unable to locate a qualifying
product". There is a browse choice for locating the product and I have tried
my d: drive (where the Office disc is inserted) and my c: drive. Both to now
avail.

A little background: The original install worked successfully for 3 years.
This is my first reinstall. I have the Office Xp standard upgrade disc (which
worked on my first install). I bought this disc at a retail outlet 3 years
ago.

What can I do to get the Office programs to work?

Thanks.

You need a qualifying product, cd, to point the install to when it asks.

The reason it worked first time was that your qualifying product was
installed.
You formatted so you lost it

The qualifying product cd is a condition of the upgrade licence for Office.
ie lose the cd, you no longer have a legal licence.

Today I uninstalled the Office Xp files and reinstalled the Works files from
the CDs provided as part of the original purchase (qualifying product). I
re-registered the product and it worked. I re-installed the Office upgrade
(the disclosures originally identified that Works is a qualified product for
upgrade). Word operates (part of the Works package) but Outlook, Powerpoint
and Excel do not. I get the same error 1608 message.

I suspect the system registry as the cause of the original lock up problem.
I am upset that I lost all my files and use of my Office product because of a
operating system failure. Now when I am forced to try a system recovery I am
not able to re-use the product. Do I have any options with Microsoft?

I will go to another operating system altogether if Microsoft does not
support their product. I certainly don't feel comfortable about the
reliability (not the first problem since purchase).

Thanks for your reply.

Note the reference to word/Works
Works is not a qualifying product for the Officexp suite

It is allways wise to have data backups, a hd failure is a common occurance

If your sys failed/locked, due to a win problem, it should - usually - have
been repairable using the win disk

Win problems are usually as a result of a file corruption which can be
caused by hardware/electrical problems are simply a third party driver, or
update.
