This isn't the first time I have had trouble with a presentation simply
stopping mid show, click the mouse, wait for the alloted seconds, it just
stops going forward

What version of PowerPoint?
There are a few possible causes, that I know about.

Is it always in the same spot?
The first idea would be size. It there a large content item (several Gigs)
referenced on the next slide? Is there a movie or something that calls on
an external application?
If you change the order of the slides, does the point where is stops
responding move also?

Does it change slides where this happens?
Do you have a virus scanner that kicks in and hogs the CPU and keeps the
source file from being accessed?
Did you create this presentation or did someone else?

These'll get us started.
