need help creating formula in excel

I am trying to work out a complicated If/Then formula:

Column A is a list of names, columns B,C,D are ski races (race B, Race C,
Race D). On a separate worksheet (same file) are the results from races
B,C,D, with a point value for each place (1st place = 1000, 2nd =800, etc).

What I am trying to do is enter a formula in the cells of the first
worksheet under each of the races, that will match the name in column A, with the same name on the second worksheet results lists, and assign the point value to that cell.

For example: John Q Racer finished 2nd in Race B, 3rd in Race C, and 7th in Race D.

Can I have a formula that will determine: If (John Q) = (one of the names
in the array of racers in race B), then (assign the point value for that
particular place {2nd place/800pts for race B})

any ideas?

Hookup should work fine. Look in help for the syntax, and report back here
if you have any problems.
