network install

I have a split database that I installed on a small office network. There is
no actual or independent server. I placed the backend in the shared folder.
Each front end is on each hard drive and they are linked to the back end. The
problem is that only the computer that is being used as the "server" computer
is the only one that is reading and writing to the backend correctly. The
other networked computer can read the data, but cannot write to it.
So, my question is, can this type of setup even work in Access and if so,
what can I try to troubleshoot the problem? I am using Access 2007 but the
file is in a 2003 format.
TIA.

Every user must have at least Read and Write privileges on the folder where
the MDB file exists. (It's usual to give them Delete as well).

Can the users create text files in the folder and write to them?
