Network Places locks up my machine

When I click on Network Places in the file dialog in any MS Office 2003
application my computer freezes. It just started happening this week. I've
uninstalled everything recent but the damage was done apparently. The
problem is only with the Microsoft applications. It does not do this in any
non-Microsoft applicaopn, for example Photoshop, and My Network Places icon
on the desktop also works fine. It's just in the file open or file save
dialog when I select My Network Places within Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.

Any ideas? I fear even an uninstall and reinstall will not fix this.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
network drives that are not currently available.
