New System won't Index Outlook Email

I have a new computer with Vista and Office 2007. I use Outlook 2007 with
local pst files (e.g. no exchange server). My indexing options are set to
include outlook – and they are explicitly set to include the 3 pst files in
my user directory. However, when I try to search in outlook I get very few
results and the message “Search Index may be incomplete because items are
still being indexedâ€.

Unfortunately, I don’t seem to be able to get outlook to do the indexing.
The “Indexing Options†control panel claims everything is done. I’ve rebuilt
the index from there several times but it doesn’t seem to help. When I click
on the incomplete indexing message in outlook, I get a dialog that used to
say roughly 21,000 items to be indexed – but day after day, that doesn’t
change. Since I’ve rebuilt the index it says 721 items to be indexed but
searching finds absolutely nothing (oddly – when it used to say 21000 items
to be indexed, I used to be able to retrieval a small subset of my mail – now
nothing is retrieved).

This is all very surprising because the system is practically out of the
box. It’s a new HP laptop that came with Vista installed. I installed
Office Standard and have done little additional configuration.

Thanks! This ended up working. I had to go through all the steps even
resetting the defaults (which I had never changed but the doc explained that
this would cause a more thorough re-index). Finally, it worked.

Not sure how my pst files got corrupted and I worry that this could happen
again and indexing will then fail silently - but for now things are working
and the integrated search/outlook experience is quite good.

thanks again.
