i just got a new computer (months ago) and have had no reason to use Word,
until now. WHen I open it, I am prompted to give a serial number, which I
don't have because word came pre-installed with the computer. what am I to
do? use a different program?

The Serial number should be located on your Office CD.

Look through all the "stuff" that came with your computer. Somewhere there
should be a case of some kind (possibly cardboard) with the Office CD(s) and
a Certificate of Authenticity on which the 25-digit key code will be
printed.
