New word software doesn't display pictures

I have a office XP on my computer. Ever since I've
installed it, any imbedded pictures show up as blanks
unless I click on the image and adjust it's size - then it
stays visible for a second before going back to "hidden".

Is there a setting I can change in word to stop this from
happening?

My old word displayed images all the time.
