As I understand it, Project has a fairly large set of
fields which it computes to tell you valuable things
about your project, like it's cost (if you input the costs
of each resource) and the end date. I think of this
a really sophisticated excel for projects. If I'm getting
this right, is there a dictionary that describes each
field and (roughly) how the field is computed?

Next, is there a way to associate a "task type" with a
task? So if I'm planning (say) a moonshot, then I may
have to train all three astronauts using the same
kind of training task. Can I create three instances of
the "train astronaut" type, with data supplied from
the type object?

Finally, can I "reuse" a particular wbs? Let say training
astronaut Alfie involves the "transport to course", "take course",
"take test" and "travel home" subtasks. Suppose I want to
outsource the training to AstroTrain Ltd. Can I get them
to give me a subtask/wbs/something that I can insert into
my moonshot project plan? If so, what it that something?
How do I get it? How do I insert it? Is it XML? CSV?

First question, the best thing here you can use if field references to learn
about each value. Just hover over the column header and click on the link to
get some help. If you want more information about the scheduling engine the
best thing to do is to search Microsoft.com. I'm warning you it might make
you a bit nuts. :)

Second question, instead of having 3 instances of the same thing, why don't
you just assign all astronauts to the same task? If you want them to be
scheduled at different times I don't see any way of doing this. You could
always use a custom field, such as text1, to create your own labels for tasks.

Third question, don't know.

Hope this helps.
