Newsgroups has disappeared

Hello,

I just noticed that Newsgroups is no longer shown under the "Go" Menu item
in my Outlook 2003. Nor is it shown when I try to customize my tool bar and
add it. According to all instructions, it is supposed to be seen under the
"Go" menu item. Any suggestions?

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

I'm having the same problem, Charmaine. Initially, as I went through the
instructioins, it seemed to go fine. I found the 'button' and moved it to the
'go' menu, but then as I continued to work, the "news" button disappeared.
It's now missing from the "customize" menu that I used to add it, and it's no
longer under the 'go' command. The 'news' button has disappeared and I can't
find a way to bring it back. Let me know if you find an answer!

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

We should all be clear, this a MS bug in the program. What the help files
suggest works sometimes and other times the news command is missing from the
Go menu. I'm hearing, and seem to recall, that the newsreader is inside
Outllook Express anyway. Why not just dump Outllook and use OE for mail too?
I only started using Outlook to interface with my PDA. I used OE for two
years with a lot less hassle. Outlook is not well put together; sort of the
"windows 98" of mail clients; it takes more space, works slower if it works
at all and has lots of bugs.

No it's not. Outlook was NEVER designed to do news. It was designed as a
corporate PIM in which NNTP didn't even feature. The fact that nowadays so
many people use Outlook as a stand-alone mail program masks that fact.

If you don't need the non-mail features Outlook provides, then by all means,
use something else. No one's twisting your arm.
