Trying to set up newsgroups in Outlook 2007. I followed the instructions in
help . . . toolbar options > add/remove > customize > categories > go. My
problem is that there is no News in the list shown. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Rick Morrison

Version of Windows? The news command doesn't work in Windows 7 - all it does
is bring up OE or Mail anyway. Win7 doesn't include a mail/news client so
you need to install windows live mail or other nntp client.

Yeo, that's the problem - Windows 7. The reason I'm trying to do this is to
get rid of Windows Live Mail.

Thanks, Rick

Then you'll need a third-party Newsreader add-in for Outlook. Outlook
doesn't do news natively.
Mapilab seems to have one of the favourites...

You'll either need a different nntp client, an addin for outlook or use a
hack to install Vista's Mail in Win7.

See http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/news.htm for addins and
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/05/download-windows-mail-from-vista-for-use-in-windows-7/
for the hack.

There has never been NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) support in any
version of Outlook. To get newsgroups to show up inside of Outlook means
you have to install an add-in, like Newshound (but there are limitations in
how Outlook itself can organize those newsgroups). For the vast majority of
users, Outlook's "News" menu merely loaded whatever was the currently
defined default newsgroups program which was usually Outlook Express.
Outlook doesn't do newsgroups. It loads some other program to do that.

As Diane pointed out, the News menu isn't available under Windows 7. So
what? Outlook wasn't doing newsgroups before, anyway. It loaded something
else. It isn't any more difficult to hit a shortcut in a toolbar in your
Windows taskbar, like in the QuickLaunch toolbar, than to navigate through
the Outlook menus to select "News". Both end up starting a program.

So, like before, you'll have to decide what program you want to use to do
newsgroups. Unless you were using an add-in, you weren't using Outlook
before so you get the same choice to make now. OE is obviously a long-dead
program. Microsoft's replacement for it is Windows Live Mail. That's one
choice; however, since you have to now make an obvious and deliberate choice
(rather than rely on defaults offered by the Windows installation), you
might also want to start investigate alternate newsreaders.
