I have tried to setup NEWS in Outlook in Office 2003, but it is not located
in GO or any group when I to customize the tool bar. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jerry

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the No button.

When I had the same problem on both desktop and notebook,
I followed these instructions.

Works fine on my desktop.
On my notebook, clicking on "News" seems to open up
a "full-fledged" version of OL Express, rather
than "Outlook Newsreader." Also, it opens up my AOL
Instant Messenger.

What's happening?
Thanks,
Ken

So the solution works on one installation but not the other?
You'll need to tell me the difference between these 2 installations.

That's the thing! They're the same installations as far as I can
distinguish: Both have XP Pro, Office 2003, Internet Exporer 6.

There must be some difference. You're the only one who can figure out what
it might be. It would be interesting to know what it is because it would
provide some clue as to why this solution works for 90% of users, but for
10% it doesn't.
How did the installation/upgrade path differ?

Both were upgraded from Office XP, and the same CD was used for the upgrade.
I realize I'm the only one who can give info on how the 2 are different, but
can you give an idea what kinds of things to consider?
Thanks.

Do you know if the Outlook 2002 installations were both at the same version
level? Do you know if OE was at the same version level and how the
newsreader was configured and functioning on both installations before the
upgrade?

I believe so, but can't be absolutely sure. The reason I think everything
was the same is that I Outlook 2002 came with Office XP, neither machine had
any version of Outlook on it before, and I installed Office on both machines
when I bought it.

It's really not a big problem, as I can get to the newsgroups on both
computers. I just like understanding what's going on, and what causes these
quirks.

Thanks.
Ken

We know they changed the way the Outlook Newsreader is configured at the
last minute in Outlook 2003, but the solution I posted works to restore the
News command in the majority of cases. We're trying to figure out the cause
for those cases where it doesn't work. So, for someone for whom it worked on
one installation but not another, any differences between those two
installations would provide a clue.
