No "recent files" availability.

I have MS-Office (XP?) installed on three system in my home, two
notebooks, and a desktop. On TWO of the systems, I'm unable to use the
"recent files" option. In tools/options/general, it's greyed out. It's
fine on the remaining system. All system are running XP Pro, SP-2. Can
anyone point me to the solution?

I did, but the only option checked was remove "Recen Documents" from
START menu. I'm speaking of the "Recent Files" list WITHIN each app.,
ie; Word,Excel, etc.

Jim,

OK! Now we're getting someplace. I HAVE the Recent Documents folder,
and the file shortcuts are THERE. I guess I need to know how to tell
Office WHERE that folder lives! Any thoughts on how I can correct the path?

The Recent Documents folder is where those applications find their lists of
"recent files". So, you unintentionally removed the lists. The files
themselves are unaffected because what removed were merely shortcuts.
