Non working days and duration points

Hi. I have recently encountered a problem that I hope has an easy solution. I
use MP as a schedule for my business (construction) which has many "rainy
days" where work can not be done at all. When I go into the calender to save
these days as non working days, I would like to know if there is a way to
have the computer automatically extend the duration date by however many
workdays I have lost. Thanks!

Hi Aj,

Bear in mind that duration to Project is always the amount of time in
*working* time. If you originally had a task with 4 days duration
scheduled for Monday through Thursday (all days Monday through Friday
are working days in the calendar.) Then make Tuesday a non-working day,
the duration of the task will still show 4 days, but the finish date of
the task is now Friday. The duration does not show the extension (it is
still 4 *working* days), but the finish date does extend.

If you want to see how many days duration the task is based upon the
original assumption of Monday through Friday with no "rain days", you
could use a spare duration column and a formula along with a calendar
without the "rain days" to show you the duration.

Create a new calendar (Tools > Change Working Time, New). Keep all
Mondays through Fridays as working days. Name the calendar. (In my
example I called it "Original".)

Insert one of the spare Duration fields (Duration1, or Duration2, etc)
and add the following formula:

ProjDateDiff([Start],[Finish],"Original")

I now see the 4 days duration in the [Duration] field but 5 days
duration in the [Duration1] field.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

You can also try this. Save a baseline (Tools/Tracking/Save Baseline).
Switch to Tracking Gantt view (View/Tracking Gantt, or View/More Views...
/Tacking Gantt)

This should display your original schedule. Now, go change any day for a
non-working day. The new project durations will show along with the baseline
without the rain delay. Julie's post also shows you how to do a formula
which could also be inserted on this page.
