Not able to connect

We had some problems with the computer, which runs Win
2000. A file called software in winnt corrupted, so it was
replaced with one from Win2000 CD - This appeared to affect
the program connections in Windows as most would not run,
wanting reinstallation. We then replaced iot with one from
my laptop, having kost of the same software, and have most
things running again.

Biggest problem -IE6 will not connect to the Internet and
Outlook won't send and recieve eMails. It appears that
they cannot find the connection. Seems the same for
Frontpage.

We has broadband - always on connection, through a router
and firewall. Have disabled the firewall with no change.

Use Opera for browsing, and that is fine - also have a VPN,
which connects fine. This eMail address is available
trhough the VPN, hence my ability to still get to some
eMails.

I assume that I have a file with incorrect settings
somewhere - can anyone give me enlightenment?
