Not getting prompt to save template

T

Tonya Marshall

WD2002
I've tried this even on a test template. When I make style changes in a
document and check Add to Template, I do not get a prompt to save the
changes to the template after I close the document or when I close Word.
The template remains in its original state.
Have I changed something?

Oddly enough, I copied the template into WD2000 to try saving the style
changes and it came up with all the changes I made and added to the template
in WD2002. But the template remains unchanged in WD2002 when a new document
from it is opened.

At least it's a change from all the copies of Word that are prompting to
save Normal.dot every time you close! This is very mysterious, though, and
worrying. Are you sure you made the changes in a document based on the
template and not in the template itself? If the latter, of course just
saving the template would suffice.

Yes. I opened it in WD2000 and all the changes were in the template.

This is a bit strange but it works. I couldn't even get my test template to do a
simple font style change. Before closing the document based on it, I went into the
Macro editor (there no macros in the template) and created a fake macro. Deleted
the macro and clicked the Save button in the VBA editor and it made the change
stick.

Given this behavior, I'd be concerned that there might be some kind of
corruption in the template.

OK, this is what I did:
Renamed Normal.dot, saved the macros to the new Normal.dot.
Created New Test.dot and saved and closed it. Opened a new document from it.
Changed the font style and sizes. "Added to template." Closed the document
without saving it. Was not prompted to save changes to the template.
Again, started a new document from New Test.dot
Did a font change and added to template.
Saved the document, then I was prompted to save the changes to the template and
they "took."
If I close the document after making changes in the template styles and don't
save the document, the template changes don't get saved.
Don't think corruption is the problem because I created the template from the
new Normal.dot.

I'm still messing around with this. Opened Word with the /a switch to see if
something in startup or Normal.dot might be the culprit but I'm still not
prompted to save changes to the template. Opening the template directly
works but would rather change things on the fly in the doc if possible.

Wondering if an uninstall/reinstall would make a difference; from what I've
seen it usually doesn't. Before I do that I'm throwing this out again to
the ng.

Apparently this is usual behavior in WD2002. On our new computer at work it does
the same thing if you aren't adding the changes from a saved document or save
the document you are making the changes from.
WD97 prompts for saving the changes whether you save the document or not, as
well as does WD2000.

Hi Tonya,

I've tried duplicating this scenario in Word 2002 and so far I receive
the prompt to save the template every time. Here's the steps I used:

1. Created a new document
2. Saved as template (Doc1.dot)
3. Modified Heading 1 style (red font color)
4. Saved/closed template
5. Created a new document based on Doc1.dot
6. Modified Heading 1 (blue font color)
7. Ticked "Add to Template"
8. Closed document w/o saving
9. Answered "No" on prompt to save document
10. Answered "Yes" on prompt to save template
11. Reopened Doc1.dot and verified Heading 1 font change

Have you verified Word is at the SP-2 level?

That's interesting, Beth. I ran Word2002 with the /a switch. Still no
prompt to save template. Then removed all templates from startup - same
results. Removed macros from Normal.dot ... nope. Checked version, it's
SP-1. It is a lone version of Word2002 rather than office 2002, so I guess
I need to go check for the SP. I'll report back after installing it. I
don't know which SP is on the version at work. I won't be able to install
SP-2 there, but at least I know I have to save the document if I want to
save changes to a template.

Hi Tonya,

It could be a matter of the service pack. In the interim can you use
Shift, File/Save All and then cancel saving the document when
prompted? Do the template changes hold?

Installed SP-2 and checked in Help/About Word and it shows SP-2 is
installed. Still no prompt to save the template if the document is not
saved. I don't think it would happen very often that I would make changes
to a template through an attached document and not save the document, so I
am not really upset about the problem. It just puzzles me.

Using Shift, File/Save All and not saving the document got me a prompt to
save changes to Dot1.dot.

I've looked at every setting I can think of to see if it got turned off
but can't find anything. I still get prompts to save changes to Normal.dot
which I think is the most important one.

It's interesting that the same behavior is appearing in Word2002 at work.

I again tried it running with the /a switch, still same results.

Hi Tonya,

That is strange indeed! If the same behavior appears in Word 2002 then
I suspect the template. Why don't you zip it up and email it to me and
I'll have a look. If anything I can rule out the template vs. your
Word setup.

Thanks for the example files Tonya. :)

I didn't find anything odd in the templates and I was prompted to save
changes to the template even though I did not save the document. Now,
one would think that points to a problem with your Word installation
BUT I do believe you found a bug!

I pondered the possibilities and I think I figured out what is
happening. :)

The 'problem' lies in how you are closing the document. If you select
File/Close and do not save the changes to the document then the
changes to the template are discarded. However if you close the
document window (x) then you receive the prompts as expected.

This bug occurs in both Word 2002 and Word 2003.

So there you have it - you're just not closing your documents
properly. <grin>

Oh, my, I'm going to have to read the etiquette book on proper document
closure. Perhaps we should consult Miss Manners <g>

LOL It is a strange one - but I guess it does make sense. The routine
used for FileClose is different from ActiveWindow.Close. Looks like
they missed something.

I guess what you could do is use this macro which intercepts the
default FileClose :

Sub FileClose()
ActiveWindow.Close
End Sub

That way you can still use your Close command on the Toolbar. I
haven't tried it but it should work.

Yes. I don't think it's a bug that many will encounter though so there
won't be a lot of complaints about it. It was just a chance happening
that I came upon it.
