Not getting prompt to save template

This came about from a discussion in newusers, subject: Using Styles - Why
So Difficult

Interestingly enough, using the old styles dialog, there's an apply button
not present when changing the styles from the task pane. If File/Close is
used and the document changes aren't saved , there still is an offer to
save the changes to the template which doesn't happen using the task pane.

I'm not sure if I follow your comment. If I use the Styles and
Formatting TP and modify a style, mark the "Add to template" option,
close the document I am prompted to save changes to both the document
and the template.

With the exception of the Close bug - what am I missing?

Also, I suspect the "Apply" command was removed because you click the
Style name on the TP instead. :)

When using the old Styles dialog, there is an Apply button that the
changes in the Styles task pane doesn't have after making styles changes.
When using the old dialog, after checking Add to Template and clicking the
Apply button, closing the document with File/Close and not saving, the
dialogue asking if you want to save the changes to the template appears.

It's not the Styles button next to the Styles Window on the Formatting
toolbar which opens the task pane, but farther down in the list of
commands in Customize/Commands/Format there is the "Style..." command
which when put on a toolbar brings up the Styles dialogue like it is in
Word 97 & 2000. I think the absence of the Apply button is the culprit in
the Styles and Formatting Task Pane method.

Good theory - especially since the TP is in Word 2002/2003.

Although, when you change a document style it modifies the document -
this is still the case even if you don't apply the style to the
paragraph your cursor is in when you modify a style.

In the case of the Styles and Formatting TP, if you want to apply the
style to the current paragraph after you modify it you click the Style
name on the TP.

As for the Close bug, I was using the TP when I modified the style.
When I used File/Close I was prompted to save changes to the document
even if I modified a style not in use.

If I use the Style dialog box and click "Apply" before closing and I
use File/Close and do not save the document I'm not prompted to save
changes to the document template.

Did you try this without the FileClose macro? ;-)

Hi Tonya,

The FileClose macro I gave you intercepts the built-in FileClose
command. If you added another command to your toolbar for the macro it
wasn't necessary.

Your Close command on the Standard toolbar and the File menu/Close
command will run the code in the macro. Now if you changed the name of
the macro then that's another story. I'm sorry, I should have made
this clearer previously. :)

To try this without the FileClose macro you would need to rename it so
Word no longer recognizes it. Try that and see if your results are the
same.

OK ... deleted the macro from Normal.dot and used the Style... dialogue.
Didn't get the prompt to save the template after closing the document, so
it's no insurance to use it either. TP & old dialogue are ineffective in
this case.

lol ... I'm going to close Word, not save the changes to Normal.dot so
that the FileSave macro is back and forget about this.

Glad the mystery is solved. :)

The problem doesn't lie in specifically in the styles. The changes to
the attached template are getting discarded if you choose not save the
document when using the built-in FileClose command.

The same bug occurs if you use the Default command in File/Page Setup,
Format/Font, and Tools/Options/Compatibility Settings. It will also
occur if adding AutoText to the template, however if the document has
not been modified the bug does not occur. So basically any feature
that allows you to modify the attached template.
