Notes subfolder created under a Mail folder is not displayed

I'm using Outlook 2007 where I've created a number of mail folders within my
personal folder. Within a number of these mail folders I have created Notes
subfolders to store my notes specific to the particular Mail folder. When I
initially launch Outlook I do see an indication of the Notes subfolders (the
"+" icon) being present. However, after a few seconds, the "+" icon
disappears and all I see are the folder icons. Is there a configuration
setting I may have inadvertantly clicked to prevent the notes folders from
displaying? This did work at one time in the past.
Thanks,

Switch to the Notes view of the Nav Pane. What do you see then?
