Notify external users with rule or out of office reply

using outlook 2003 exchange 2003 both sp2

We recently had a user leave the company. I want to notify all external
people that send this user email that they are no longer here and should
address correcspondance to another users.

I am using Out of Office Reply but would love another solution.

Any ideas? Is there a way to change the Subject in Out of Office Reply?

That would look very sloppy to your customers. You are telling them
that an employee left and that you cannot manage to redirect his
inbound e-mail to whomever is now responsible for his job. Except for
personal e-mails (which you don't care about), any company-related
e-mails that you receive should go to whomever now should handle them.
The new person responsible shouldn't even mention that the old
employee is gone unless the customer actually asks. They should
simply state that they are now responsible to handle those e-mails.

Telling your customers to resend their e-mails is an irritation to
them and makes you look amateurish. Typically the Exchange server is
configured to *not* send OoO replies to outside the company for this
reason, plus they don't need to advertise to spammers that they hit a
valid domain and e-mail address there.

Careful. Using any type of reply like that has security ramifications. You
would be gratuitiously handing out the addresses of other employees to
anyone using the original address, giving potential threats wider coverage.
Instead, you should be using Exchange's features to silently redirect the
incoming messages to other mailboxes so that the sender has no idea s/he
reached a non-existent (or existent) mailbox and let the people to whom
you've redirected the messages decide if it's legitimate and then answer,
"I'll be working with you instead," to the sender.

There is no method to change the Out of Office subject line (Out of Office: <original message subject line>). If you don't like the OOF
subject line, please use the Rules instead.
