Novice question on footers

S

silly

Hello, can someone please help.

I have been using Word for a long time and I thought I fully understood how
to format footers until recently.

I want a oneline footer, say 'Page x of Y', to appear about 0.5 cm from the
bottom of the page and the body of text to appear around 1.0cm from the
bottom.

So when in "view page layout" I move the slider on the left to adjust the
bottom margin, then double click on the header, move the slider for the top
margin (of the header) and then close the Header and Footer toolbar. Now I'm
back in "view page layout" and I seem to have set my footer correctly.

However when I do a File Print Preview, the footer is clipped or not
visible.

Why is there a difference between the Print Preview and the "view page
layout" ?

I'm running Word 2000 (9.0) that came bundled with XP Home Edition.

Thanks for any help given.

Hi, silly,

You're probably putting the footer into the printer's unprintable area. For an
inkjet printer that's usually about 1.7 cm (0.67 inch), but it differs by brand
and model. The Print Preview is more exacting than Page Layout view in asking
the printer driver about what it can print, hence the difference. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/BottomsDontPrint.htm for workarounds.
