Numbering in subdocuments of master document

Help!!

Can anyone tell me how I go about numbering different headings within
subdocuments of a master document. I have managed to do it in each
subdocument but this does not appear to transfer across to the master
document. If I expand all the subdocuments I can manage to number all the
headings but then when I close down the master doc and then reopen it all the
numbers have disappeared except for the 1st subdocument.

Can anyone halp?

Thank you Stefan,

I am writing a PhD thesis. I am going to need all the headings standardised
between chapters which I could do in each seperate document. I will need to
have page numbers and a table of contents which is more difficult to achieve
if the thesis is split into several word documents.

In your opinion is it better to lump all the subdocuments together to have
one large document ( I have approx 10 docs - together they would make up
about 200 pages of text - no figures / pictures) so that formatting of
headings, page numbers and table of contents might be easier, or would you
stick with seperate smaller documents. If its the latter, how does one make
the table of contents

Thank you for your help

For that size document I would absolutely advise combining all the documents
into one. Especially without any graphics, 200 pages is not even a "long
document" for Word, and the TOC, index, numbering, pagination,
cross-referencing, and everything else will be infinitely easier to
maintain.

If you want to work on chapters separately to start with (especially if
there's some question of the order in which you will combine them), just
make sure they're all based on the same template and/or that you apply
styles with the same names (they don't have to have the same formatting)
consistently (and it's highly recommended that you use Word's built-in
styles, especially the heading styles, for this purpose). You can experiment
with the formatting of the styles to determine what works best and work
toward creating a template that has the style definitions you decide on.
When you combine all the documents into one based on the template in which
you've defined the styles you settled on, the paragraphs with the same-named
styles will update automatically.
