Numbering rows in table - Word 2002 windows XP

Hi - I am triying to auto fill the first column in my table with a
1,2,3,...series. I followed the Help instructions to select the row and
click on the numbering button on the formatting toolbar. I tried changing
alignment to see if the numbers just weren't visible with no luck. Any ideas
why this isn't working for me?
