O2K Setup

John Harris

We provide support, training and development assistance in
Office products. We develop, templates, macros,
applications, etc. as well as providing one-on-one
training. We utilise two PCs specifically for customer
training, etc. and have licenced versions of OfficePro97
and OfficePro2K and have a subscription-based Action Pack
including OfficeProXP.

Because we support all versions of Office, we do not
install anything into the default Office Path of:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\

We install OfficePro97 into:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office97\

We install OfficePro2K into:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office2K\

We install OfficeProXP into:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft OfficeXP\

We maintain dedicated Start Menu groups for each version
and also dedicated desktop folders for each version. These
contain the necessary shortcuts to initiate the desired
application. The only limitation is that we can only have
one version of Outlook, so we keep the latest (XP).

Recently I had to fully remove all Office applications and
reinstall them on these two machines. This was done
through the Add/Remove facility and appeared to work fine,
except for the issues listed below. Prior to this
EVERYTHING WAS WORKING AS I NEEDED.

Now, I have the following problems.

1. On machine "A" all Office versions reloaded as
expected - first 97 then 2K and then XP. All OfficePro97
applications initiate as expected, all OfficePro2K
applications initiate as expected and all OfficeProXP
applications initiate as expected EXCEPT:

1a. When you run WORD XP, the Windows installer appears,
executes for approx. 5 - 10 seconds, displays 1-2 progress
bars and then Word starts and runs normally (it doesn't
ask for the CD). This occurs the first time you start Word
XP after each reboot but does not occur if you start Word
XP a second time without a reboot in between.

1b.When you initiate Excel XP, the message about a
significant change to the machine configuration
necessitating reactivation appears and the activation
wizard starts. It asks for the CD, runs about 30-45
seconds, displays 3-4 progress bars but never goes to the
subsequent steps in the activation wizard where it asks
for the country code, etc. After 30-45 seconds Excel XP
starts and runs normally. This message and activation
process occurs EVERY TIME you start Excel XP.

Note: On machine "A", other than the two issues listed
above for Word and Excel, the other XP applications
(Access, Powerpoint, etc.) start fine - no installer, no
activation wizard.

2. On machine "B", I installed OfficePro97 to the path:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office97\

All the OfficePro97 applications start fine. However, on
this machine, when I go to install OfficePro2K and I get
to the step in the setup wizard where you can specify the
installation folder, I can't specify the path I want. The
default path of:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\
is displayed, but the control is greyed out and won't
accept input from the keyboard and there is no browse
button to select the desired path with the mouse. This is
inconsistent with all other installations of OfficePro2K
that I can recall.

Needless to say, I have already attempted
deinstall/reinstall to correct the issues without success.
We also maintain the latest patches/service packs on CD
for each version and these have been applied without
success.

Any assistance on the causes of any/all of the above would
be greatly appreciated.

Just a thought, I believe MS has a specific tool to ensure complete removal
of office, I'm not sure whether this is the same as the win installer
uninstall utility.
MS Office from O2K version, installs by default, to a version specific
folder ie Office9 , Office10 etc
