It's difficult to offer advice when you do not tell us what error
message you're getting. Why can't you just quote the error message in
its entirety, without generalization, without interpretation, without
obfuscation, and without omission of parts you don't think are
important? In general, see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313602
"Support resources for installing and troubleshooting Office 2000 Setup".

A fatal error... A terminal error... Can't get much more generic than
that I suppose. My guess is that the Office 2000 Professional installer
program is getting confused because you already have Office 2000 Premium
installed on the laptop, and you can't have two copies of Office 2000 on
the same computer. You could back up your Outlook .pst file(s), Word
templates/autocorrect files/custom dictionary files, etc., uninstall
Office 2000 Premium, and then try to install Office 2000 Professional.
Or you could do a custom installation of Office 2000 Professional in
which you only select the components of Office 2000 Pro that are not
already installed on the laptop as part of Office 2000 Premium.
