Office 2000 SR-1 error popups for users only

I am deploying a new set of PC's for my user LAN and am
running into problems with Office 2000 Premium SR-1.

If I have a user log into the domain (NT4 PDC) from a
Win2kproSP4 machine they get errors starting up any office
product. Multiple popups indicating that the Installer is
attempting to install a feature occur each time any
product is started (word/excel/outlook/etc). If I build
up a machine WITHOUT the service pack I have no problems.
If I apply SR-1 these problems happen to all users. I
have installed Office "custom" set to "run all from my
computer" so I could avoid running around inserting the CD
each time someone uses an feature that wasn't installled.

No article from technet has helped, multiple web searches
reveal nothing. Again let me stress that without the
installation of SR-1 patch (or SR2 or SR3) this problem
never occurs.

Any ideas before I waste another 200 dollars calling
microsoft and hearing them tell me to upgrade to Office XP?
