what is the difference between office 2000 and office 2000 upgrade?
I need one for my mums computer, but which works best on XP Home Edition?

There is *no* difference. The "upgrade" version requires you to be in
possession of a valid qualifying product to install it. that's why the
"upgrade" version is cheaper. that's all.
