Office 2003: Error 1714

I have attempted, in vain, 3 times to install Office 2003
Standard Edition Upgrade over Office XP Standard Edition.
1) Each time the cursor turns to an hourglass
indefinitely when I click on the Product Key dialog box
to type in the number. After pressing Cont/Alt/Delete 3
times, a normal cursor returns and I type in the number.
2) While the installation is in progress, I noticed that
it was preparing to install Office Standard XP.
3) When the installation is about one-third complete, an
error notice pops up:
Error 1714. Setup cannot remove the older version of
Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003. Contact
Microsoft Support Services (PSS) for assistance. For
info about how to contact PSS....

How did the installation CD get soooo confused: trying
to install Office XP and failing to uninstall Office
2003...when it should have been just the opposite?

I had told it to do the upgrade and install all of the
older version.

Does anyone understand this? Is there a "fix"? Or do
you think I got a corrupted CD in the upgrade box?

where to find what to do about <Error 1714>? Thank you

You may be correct on the need to do some cleanup.
See if you can complete a repair/reinstall of Office XP
from Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel.

It not, the situation may be similar to the steps in
this article.

Thank you HUGELY, Bob, for responding!

My attempts at "repairing" and reinstalling and
UNinstalling Office XP failed. Finally, I did a complete
installation from the Office XP disk, and the full
installation worked; however the Off 2003 installation
after that still failed.

I took all the info about each "warning" and "error" from
my Event Viewer and emailed it to me, so I can print it
and try to put some stuff together in my head.

Just while ago, I did a system restore on my machine, and
got the info from the Event Viewer after that also.

The Event Viewer has given fairly specific info; I just
don't know what to do about what it says. Someone who
understands the terminology would probably know
immediately what the prob is and how to remedy it!

I am an old woman trying to learn puter stuff as fast as
possible to make up for starting so late in life, and I
am determined to do everything my puter needs myself;
that is how I have learned as much as I have the last 3
years.

But this one really has me stumped and is delaying my
studio work waaaay much.

Thank you AGAIN for the links, and I will go there now!
