Hello. I've been recently using the Office 2003 ONLINE features which
includes downloading letter templates and clip art. More specificially, when
I click on the download button for a letter template, the normal "save to
disk/open from its current location" is NOT an option. In otherwords, the
templates simply download after clicking on the download button. Therefore,
my questions are 1)are these letter templates being saved on my computer, if
so, where? 2) are these clip arts being saved on my computer, if so, where?
I'm asking these questions because I foresee myself using the exact same
ones and I'm not sure if I have to download them every time or if they are
saved
on my pc somewhere. Thank you in advance. Rochelle.

Hi Rochelle,

The OfficeOnline template files use an add-in control that is added
to your browser by the Office site. The templates open
in to the correct Office application and then you can
use File=>Save As to save it either as a document or template
file on your PC.

While you won't need the following to use the feature...
The template files are downloaded to the temporary internet files
directory as part of a .cab file in the current implementation
for Office 2003. The .cab file name contains a template
that matches the page you're on at
http://office.microsoft.com/templates

For example, the Thanksgiving Day greeting card for MS Word
located here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TC010195591033.aspx
will download a cabfile listed as
"file.aspx?AssetID=TC010195591033&ax=1&CTT71" (assuming you're
setup for 'U.S. English'. (note the 'TC01019559 in both, the 1033
is the 'English'

If you open that file it will give you the option to save
it to your drive as a .cab file named 01019559.cab

but it's easier just to open them into your apps and then save
from there. Make sure that if you're using a firewall that
it allows the apps to pull in the templates for you, and don't
forget to 'vote' (rate) each template using the Taskpane
that will appear in your Office 2003 apps.

Hi Bob- Thank you for your help. In short, it sounds like you were
describing two ways of downloading the template and/or clipart. 1st way is
to open excel, word, etc and download the file. Then I can perform a "save
as" function and save it in "my documents". 2nd way is to visit
www.office.microsoft.com/templates and download the file in which the screen
will download it as a .cab file. It appears the 1st way is much easier and
user friendly, is that correct?
Meanwhile, my understanding of your explanation if I perform the 1st method
is that a small file will be created in my temp files.....with that said, is
there a way that I can periodically delete these small files so that they
don't take up space eventhough they are small? My fear is that I see myself
downloading many templates and/or cliparts and I just dont want to crowd up
my machine. Thank you again. Rochelle.

Hi Rochelle,

The 'method' is about the same as far as going
to http://office.microsoft.com/templates or clicking
on the link to templates in your Word or other app taskpane.
You don't need to know about the cab files :)

For clipart you can use the taskpane or the Clip Organizer
to add clipart to your local hard drive as you can with
the template gallery or visit http://office.microsoft.com/clipart
but, if you are going to be able to access the internet
on a high speed connection you can use the templates or
clipart without adding it all to your PC.

The 'trick' in either approach is being able to find the
clipart or template later either online or from your hard
disk, especially if you collect a lot of them :)

Thanks again Bob. You mentioned something about making sure I "rate" the
template. Can you elaborate a little more on what is that and why do it?
Thank you and have a great day! I'm glad their are people like yourself
willing to help less savvy computer people. Rochelle

Hi Rochelle,

When you download a template into an Office app
from http://office.microsoft.com/templates (also
through the TaskPane in the apps) when it loads
into Word the 'Template Help' taskpane opens
and at the bottom is a 'Feedback' section asking
you to rate the template.

Ratings help others know if the template was useful
and also for MS to see if they should follow the example
of that template when creating other new content.
