office 2003 professional Installation hangs - no error message

Hi,
I bought Office Professional 2003 upgrade and tried to install on XP
Professional SP2 with Works 8 as the qualifying product.
The installation runs until it is verifying the product, the progress bar
gets half way, the message "verifying installation" disappears so only says
"Current Action". It then does nothing, if left long enough the microsoft
installer task is listed as not responding in task manager.
I have reinstalled XP onto a new hard disk assuming this problem was to do
with my PC's OEM but the new build does exctly the same thing.
There are no error messages or events written to event viewer.
Has anyone else had this problem or know of a solution?
Thanks

I called the support line, the message stated that they are on holiday until
the new year and suggested I try to find a solution on-line.
I have found some vaguely useful clues - including mention of a V2 of
msiexec.exe (3.1) which fixes a problem where the installation fails silently
if a protected file cannot be overwritten.
I turned off System Restore and installed again, first Works 8 which seemed
to work, then Office Pro 2003. This time it got much further before it
stalled. After a while I cancelled the instullation, it then uninstalled.
I tried again and got it to the point where it stalled and I terminated the
msiexec processes (about 4 instances). This time it didn't uninstall.
I tried to activate but it failed, I called the activation line and the
automated system allowed me to activate it.
It seemed to work but I ran Office Update which hung. It still worked after
cancelling the update.
That was at 3AM, today I installed activesync 3.7 after the install the
icons for office were all default program icons and when run I got the
message "this action is only valid for programs that are currently installed".
Back to the drawing board then.
Surely Microsoft are aware of this problem, I've seen other people
complaining of similar problems on other groups but haven't seen how they
were resolved.
I had thought it might be because of something Mesh had done in building the
PC, but I've started with a blank hard drive (more expense) and still have
the same problem. most software installs ok so that should let msiexec off
the hook.
sorry if I'm venting ?
;-)

There was no need to install qualifying produce, you just pop cd in when
office installation complains, point to it, then swap cd.

I'm unsure if your now saying Office has installed, but icons have changed.
If so you should be able to repair using office cd.

I would'nt install any sync products until you are sure Office is
functioning correctly, including update.
