I used GP to install Office 2003 in my organization. I chose to use the
local cache option for the install.

Now I want to install Office 2003 sp1. I keep reading the update
information on http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/updates/patch_o2k3.htm
and I must be dense, because I just don't get what I need to do. I want to
update my compressed CD install point and then update my users via my Group
Policy.

Is there an instruction set somewhere. Please.

Fredrick, what you're requesting isn't possible. First, the Local Install
Source feature is controlled via SETUP.EXE. GP installs do not use
SETUP.EXE but relies on MSIEXEC. The Windows Installer does not provide any
support for this feature (maybe one day it will).

Secondly, the design of the Local Install Source is that the original
install source must remain unmodified. The updates must be pushed to users
as client patches. For more on how to take advantage of LIS, see the Office
Resource Kit content at
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/two/ch3/DepC06.htm.

So, I can not use GP to push out a client install, but must use SMS or some
other additional program to update my clients.
This is really disappointing.

If I had realized this I would have went with an administrative install
instead of the recommended compressed cd image network installation point.

Is there a way to get a compressed cd image of the full Office 2003
professional w/ sp1 so that I could replace my current installation point
and do an uninstall and reinstall via GP?

Not exactly. You can use GPO in conjuction with an Office Admin image and
you can update that image (this is no different than the way the Office 2000
and Office XP worked). What you cannot do is use the Local Install Source
feature with GPO as it requires an Admin image not a compressed CD image.
The LIS feature is controlled via SETUP.EXE which is not used by GPO.

The information in the Office Resource Kit at
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/two/ch5/DepC04.htm should help you
determine how to deploy via GPO.
