Office 2007, SP1 fails through Windows Update on Vista

D

Dylan Parry

Hi,

Yesterday I was alerted to SP1 for Office 2007, so I clicked on install
updates button and several minutes later I was presented with an error
message "code 57E". I've tried to find out what this error means, but so
far I have had no luck - I have no idea how to get anything more
detailed than the confusing "code 57E", which really means nothing!

As a last-ditch attempt, I downloaded the full patch to run it locally,
rather than through Windows Update, but that also failed. This time just
stating that it couldn't be installed and not even giving a reason.

Has anyone else seen this error before? What does it mean? More
importantly, how can I fix it?

Cheers,

N

Nathan

I followed a similar procedure. The SP1 install failed 4 times through WAU. I
too downloaded the full patch but get a failure when I try and install it. I
wouldn't be so annoyed, but I'm trying to get Vista sorted for my parents
while I'm home for the holidays, but I only have four more days!

Hey Guys,

This may sound crazy, but just before you try to re-download SP1, please put
the Office 2007 CD in your CD drive, cancel the auto-setup pop-up, and then
download and install SP1. We think the problem may be with the local cached
Office files on your hard drive, and putting the Office CD in the drive will
allow the SP1 setup routine to find the correct files.

Please, please respond back to the newsgroup so we know if this fixed your
issue. Thanks!

Sorry, I asked y'all to do the wrong thing....

I'd like you to try to insert the Office 2007 CD and do a Repair from the
CD. Then, try to download and install SP1. Please reply to the group so we
know how it went. Thanks...

When doing a repair, at around 75% of the way through, I get this error:

"Error 1406.Setup cannot write the value to the registry key
\software\Classes\.png\OpenWithList\ois.exe. Verify that you have
sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact Microsoft
Support Services (PSS) for assistance. Fro more information see
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\Setup00000464\PSS10R.CHM"

It then continues the repair after clicking on "ignore". After which, I
download the service pack and attempt to install. Installation falls
over at exactly the same point, with the same error message as before
(code 57E).

Thanks Dylan,

I know you probably already checked this, but can you verify that you're
using a user name that has local admin priveleges? Anytime I see
"permissions" I always have to ask this. <g>

Repairing does not help on my version.
I have the Office Ultimate 2007 install file purchased from
theultimatesteal.com.
I am using XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T42.

Heh, I thought I wrote that in my reply, but it turns out that I just
thought about it :) Yes, I ran both the repair and update as an
administrator.

We're still investigating this error & from what we've gathered so far, the
temporary solution is to have
the CD in the drive at the time of SP1 installation. Doing so should enable
the installation of SP1.

Please reply back & let everyone know whether this resolves it for you.

Hi Debbie

I have a 2 month old Sony Vaio with Vista Business and Office 2007 Standard
pre-installed. After multiple failures of the SP1 install, all showing the
code 78F, I tried what you suggested. I ran repair from the Office 2007 CD,
left it in the drive after the repair successfully completed and then re-ran
SP1 install. The only thing I did not do is to delete the original SP1
download and re-download with the CD in the drive. Should I try that? I have
not tried installing Windows Installer 3.1, as it does not show Vista as an
approved OS. I assume that is because Vista has the same functionality built
in?

Nick

Never mind... I've managed to sort it. For some odd reason, a program
had altered the registry key for .png files and had locked it so that
nothing else could edit that key. I managed to unlock it, and then both
the repair and update worked fine.

Cheers,

Hi-

I still cannot get SP1 to install. The machine I am working on is a Dell
desktop with Vist Home, using Office 2007 Home and Student Edition. Office
came pre-installed. Here are the steps, in order, I have tried

1) Used the install disk to repair office, than tried to install SP1 with
the office disk in the DVD tray.

2) Uninstalled, then re-installed, office then tried to install SP1 with the
office disk in the DVD tray.

3) Re-downloaded SP1 and tried to install it with the office disck in the
DVD tray. Still no luck.

What next?

Thanks,

Nathan

I put the Office CD in the drive and tried the installation again.
It worked fine!
I had downloaded SP1 to the desktop and ran it from there.
Prior to this solution, I kept getting the 78F error message.
I am running Vista Home premium on a Sony Vaio laptop with 2 gig memory.

Thanks Debbie!

Appologies for being so inarticulate :) "No luck" isn't much help.

Ok, when I go to install SP1, a security warning asks me to run it because
the file does not have a valid digital signature. I press run, click on
"allow", agree to the license terms, an update detection runs briefly and
then I get a message that says "the installation of this package failed."
There is no message as to why, and no buttons to click other than "ok."

Thanks again,

Nathan

I too have been having problems installing the Update, but my sysmptoms are
different. I tried the "Disk in the drawer" and it had no effect.

(I am running XP sp2)

I believe I have a corrupted update database as it keeps saying:

"There is a problem with this Windows installer Package. A program run as
part of the setup did not finish as expected...."

So I backed up everything and tried to UN-Install Office 2007...thought I
would go clean...

From the control panel OR the disk, I get the same error messaqge as above.

When I run office diagnostics... It says that the components of Office are
"NA"...

Needless to say I am concearned ....

They are running now, but I want to make them happy...

PS... I have run One Care live, (It says to install Office SP1), turned off
all Virus, etc...

I've tried to fix this on mine for two days and I got the following to fix
the problem:

First, go into the registry and make sure that you have rights and ownership
on all of the section in the registry. If you do not, take ownership and give
yourself full control over each section in the registry.

Second, download the update to your hhd and then install from the download.
When the install gives you a message that it can not write to the registy
click on "ignore" and it will go through and install the update.

Third, after you complete the install from the download, allow the update
that your system is showing to install. They should install completely now.
Don't know why but it did the job for my system.

This seems to a rather wiedely spread fault in office 2007 SP1 I have the
fault with clients using SXp as wellas Vista. Unfortunately no fix suggested
yet works (23 December2007). On the other hand examination of what the fix
does suggests that if updates have been regualrly applied you do not really
need it. The additional language faculities for word can be downloaded
separately.
