Just got off the phone with MSFT support. Had to do a full uninstall /
reinstall to remedy. Then, of course, needed to reinstall SP1 and then 12.1.1.

:-(

Try dragging the installer to your drive.
Same problem here on my iBook G4 and my iMac G4. But curiously, 12.1.1 installed just fine on my PowerMac G5. Also the 12.1.1 installation problem still occurs on these two G4 machines even when I drag the 12.1.1 installer to the desktop (as suggested). Any further ideas or suggestions?

Any help would be appreciated. I just tried unsuccessfully to update to
Office 12.1.1. The installer was unable to find the existing installation of
Office on the hard drive; although it is clearly there.

You can try the workaround of dragging the installer to the desktop.

You can also get this error if you have modified Office or your system as
described here.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/update.html#modify>

Fix when you have modified files:

1. Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key down
to disable any startup items.)
2. Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
3. Empty Trash.
4. Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk. See details
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/install_office2008.html> Let the
AutoUpdate update itself. You might want to select to leave in Dock so you
can access it during the update process. It's hidden now and requires you to
launch an application to access unless you know where to find it.
5. Restart
6. Update to SP1
7. Restart (restarting before you launch any app is important!)
8. Run the 12.1.1 updater with no applications running (log out/in with
shift key down)
9. Restart
10. Run Repair Permissions from Disk Utility.
