Office 97 Upgrade Install on Windows XP

I bought a new computer. My old computer had Office 97
Upgrade installed and ran on Windows 98. My new computer
runs on Windows XP. Why can't I install Office 97
Upgrade on the new computer? I have the original program
disk with the CD key.

Hi I am Ron not you so am I going to have to change my user name again. At
least I don't hide behind an anonymous posting thing. One of these days I
will find out how to do it though.

Also it would appear that as you have an UPGRADE disk you need a qualifying
product. Just one of the ways Microsoft makes money, they sell you a cheap
version then make you buy the dear version when you buy a new computer.
It would make life easier if people would search the intenet and newsgroups
before posting about common problems. Even I have given up with people who
have lost their cdkey and serial number though it looks like someone else
has taken that job over.

What exactly are the error messages you are getting?
Posting that it will not install is not very helpful.

Actually, Jane, the error message isn't necessary - as there is only one he
can be receiving - '1608 - Setup cannot locate a qualifying product on this
machine'. The answer's simple. If he no longer has a qualifying product,
then he has to purchase a new(er) version.
