Office in My Comp, C:\, Program Files but NOT in Start, All Progra

R

Randy T

Office installed in My Comp, C:\, Program Files but NOT in Start, All
Programs. Have reinstalled a couple times with same results. Unable to open
Excel, Word, etc.... ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED !

D

DL

And the version of Office? & what o/s?
What *exactly* is meant by "installed in My Comp, C:\, Program Files"

R

Randy T

Version 2002 including service pack 2. Windows xp home edition.

Also, the exact wording of the error message is "Application must be
installed to run. Please run setup from the location where you originally
installed the application."

A couple other things that may / may not be a factor here. The computer HAD
Windows 98 and I have upgraded to XP. To accomplish going to XP I added
memory to go FROM 64 mb to 320 mb.

When the error message says "...originally installed...." are they referring
to the windows 98, which I believe MAY have been preloaded (but I'm not
positive) or are they referring to the Windows XP ?

I'm a rookie at this stuff. Thanks for your patience with me.

Thank you

Any change that Office was copied onto that computer instead of installed?
I'm thinking files were copied elsewhere, Win XP installed, and then Office
copied back over. If that's the case, delete those files and use the
installation discs.

R

"Any chance".... the way I do things probably a pretty good chance....

I "assumed" it "installed", all I did was put the disc in the cd-rom and it
started running.

I'll delete "Program Files" and all folders / sub-folders / files and try
using the installation discs .... again..... Right ????

Start>Search>All Files and Folders
enter the file name Winword.exe
click on More Advanced Options
select the top three (system, hidden & subfolder)
Search Btn
What does it reveal?

Just ONE item listed. It is Winword C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
8,593 KB Application.

Hope that helps !!! By the way, kudos for the format of your instructions

kind of direction works really well for a rookie like me.

In win create a restore point
Start>Help & Support
Click System Restore (right side)
Select Create a Restore Point & follow wizard (next)
After completion & you have closed any windows go through My Computer and
select/highlight the folder "Microsoft Office"
Hit the Delete Btn (keyboard)
You should get a confirmation window and see files 'deleting'
Next Start>Run
Enter %temp% in the box, then OK it
A window should open after a pause with a whole list of files Folders
Select the topmost folder press & hold the shift key (left side of keyboard
up pointing arrow) and press Page Down (keyboard)
You will have highlighted all the folders/files in the window, hit the
delete Btn
Continue this untill you have emptied the Temp Folder - some files will not
delete as they are in use, this is normal.
After all done reboot your PC and check it seems to be ok

In the Task Bar (usually bottom of the window) you will see many icons on
the right side
Put the mouse arrow over an Icon a little notice should pop up stating what
it is, rt click and if there is an option to Exit do so - dont worry about
any AntiVirus or Network Connection Icon, leave them be.

Next pop your Office cd in after a pause, a window should open with MS
instructions to Install Office (Fingers crossed :) )
I believe your problem was caused by background software or settings that
simply copied the Office cd rather than installing it

Next window double click Program Files
Next window double click Microsoft Office
Next window double click Office
You should see a whole host of files & folders
Do you see excel.exe, Outlook.exe,Winword.exe (under name heading)

Just ONE item listed. It is Winword C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office
8,593 KB Application.

Hope that helps !!! By the way, kudos for the format of your
instructions
to me. I really like the SPECIFIC direction (ie: Start>Search ....)
That
kind of direction works really well for a rookie like me.

Thanks

Randy T

:

I would'nt do any deleting at this stage.
Start>Search>All Files and Folders
enter the file name Winword.exe
click on More Advanced Options
select the top three (system, hidden & subfolder)
Search Btn
What does it reveal?

"Any chance".... the way I do things probably a pretty good
chance....

I "assumed" it "installed", all I did was put the disc in the
cd-rom
and
it
started running.

I'll delete "Program Files" and all folders / sub-folders / files
and
try
using the installation discs .... again..... Right ????

Randy

:

Any change that Office was copied onto that computer instead of
installed?
I'm thinking files were copied elsewhere, Win XP installed, and
then
Office
copied back over. If that's the case, delete those files and use
the
installation discs.

Well if you used the Office CD there is no 'Install windows XP' msg a window
for 'Office 2003' would have opened
Delete the Program Folder via My Computer, as before
Delete temp files as before
Rt click on the Recycle Bin (Desktop) and select 'empty recycle bin'
Re boot PC
Insert Office cd
If any msg/window appears that is not entitled 'Office 2003' Cancel/No the
msg
From My Computer window, double click the cd/dvd icon
Next window a list of Files/Folders contained on the cd should open,
primarily .CAB files, schroll down the list, double click on "setup.exe"
That should do it

It would appear your cd drive has been perminently set to copy the cd
contents, I would suspect this may a setting from Burning Software, but I
dont know. You would probably need to post to a windowsXP group for how to
alter the default setting for when a cd is inserted.
Often when you insert a cd a window pops up asking what you want to do with
the cd, & there is an option to allways use the selected action - I suspect
this is what you have done - Clicked on OK Btn without reading the contents
fully

In win create a restore point

Click System Restore (right side)
Select Create a Restore Point & follow wizard (next)
After completion & you have closed any windows go through My Computer
and
select/highlight the folder "Microsoft Office"
Hit the Delete Btn (keyboard)
You should get a confirmation window and see files 'deleting'
Next Start>Run
Enter %temp% in the box, then OK it
A window should open after a pause with a whole list of files Folders
Select the topmost folder press & hold the shift key (left side of

You will have highlighted all the folders/files in the window, hit the

Continue this untill you have emptied the Temp Folder - some files

After all done reboot your PC and check it seems to be ok

what
