office xp problem

A friend has a machine running winME (soon to be replaced) and I tried
installing win2000. (I am getting to the office xp problem). The machine
would not accept win2000 and I had to reset the machine to the last known
good configuration. Now when she clicks on word xp she gets a message saying
that she has to "reactivate her product". Does that mean reinstall? That she
can not do as she no longer has the office disks. Can I remove the xp
version and install 2000 without major headaches?

Thanks
Kevin

presumably not a valid version of office xp?
No, it was a valid version, the disks were lost in a previous move. This was
a strange problem as she was using office xp for months with no problem, no
request for activation, no error messages at all. Anyway, problem solved,
installed office 2000 and uninstalled xp.

Thanks for the only reply,

Kevin

If xp disks lost, if retail version apply to ms for replacements, if oem
version contact origonal supplier.
Reactivate means either on line activation or phone ms to reactivate. It
doesnt mean reinstall, however if hardware has changed, which yrs has, you
may have to do a repair install.

Hi, read me again. The hardware did not change, the software did. I don't
know where she got the office xp disks and now it is not an issue as office
xp is no longer on the machine. I installed 2000 and then used add/remove
programs to totally remove xp. No muss no fuss and she has access to all the
office files still on the hard drive.
