Office XP Professional Academic: Setup won't run

On a HP Pavilion 503a after a non destructive reload of
XP OS from image, Office will not work, and neither will
setup on the original CD. Setup exits on keystroke or
mouse movement after diplaying the owner/product key
entry page. No error message is displayed.

Any help appreciated in getting setup to complete.
