Office XP tries to "load" when I attempt to open any document.

It now says that Office XP is not installed for the current user. I am the
only user on this system, and have been using Office XP on it for about a
year. I can open some Word docs with Works, but cannot access Excel or
password protected Word docs. I've tried a few ways to open Word, without
success. I need to access some docs immediately.

I still have the CD and product key. Can I uninstall and reinstall Office?

more info:
I already tried "repair" with the CD.

OS is Win ME.

Only recent change I can think of was disabling msqmgr thru msconfig; this
was done several days before Office problem began. (no official MS info on
qmgr found; consensus from various other sources was to disable it)

OK, here's some more.

After a message saying that Office is loading, a second message says "Please
wait while Windows configures Microsoft OfficeXP Standard.."

A new message box shows "Error 2908. An internal error has occurred. Contact
Microsoft Product Support Services for assistace." The address for MS PSS
leads here.

Thanks for the article. I followed the directions for Win ME: msconfig,
selective startup, cleared boxes, restart. It restarted with a blue screen,
saying "There is a problem with a system file. Windows might not be able to
run correctly. You might be able to fix this problem by running System
Restore. If not, try reinstalling Windows."

VxD dynamic link blah blah blah.

"To continue running Windows, choose yes. "

I chose yes, which just gave the same blue screen. I'm looking at it now,
posting this on a different system.

Any idea what to do now? Thanks.

Had to restart by holding down power switch. From menu, chose to start in
safe mode. In Run box, open scanreg /fix. Got a warning "If you run an MS-DOS
program in safe mode, you risk corrupting the video display or experiencing
other anomalies. Do you want to run the program anyway?"

I won't procede until I hear from someone here. Thanks.

Couldn't say what else you should do as I have never used Microsoft Office
XP nor Windows ME.

I'm sure someone else has some suggestions.

Thanks, anyway. Since I can't use Office XP, and don't know if reinstalling
would do any good, I downloaded and installed "OpenOffice". Supposedly this
free office suite will allow me to work with MS Office docs and spreadsheets.
It seems to work, but I don't know if it will open password protected
docs/spreadsheets. (Initial attempts didn't work.) I transfered some of
them to another system, removed pw protection, and transfered back.

If no one can tell me how to get Office XP to work, is there any advice
about using OpenOffice to work around the problem? Thanks.

About all I could tell you to do is to look at the OpenOffice.org
documentation and have a look (or post) at the OpenOffice.org forum.

http://www.openoffice.org/
http://documentation.openoffice.org/
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/

If you haven't already downloaded and installed them, I'd also suggest that
you take a look at the

Microsoft Word Viewer 2003

Microsoft Excel Viewer 2003

Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2003

I don't which (if any) open password protected files, but you could try.
