Office XP Upgrade causes Supersocket info: (SpnRegister):Error 135

We have a client running a Dell Dimension PC running Windows 2000 Pro and
with Office 97 Pro installed. They now want to upgrade this PC to their
standard Office suite (XP Pro), but when they run setup.exe they get the
following message:-

Supersocket info: (SpnRegister):Error 1355

The Office XP Cd runs fine on other PCs also running W2k Pro.

All other threads with this type of error seem to be SQL server-related, so
we are currently rather stuck.

Is it an HDD format and PC re-build, or can anybody shed any light ?
