On word cursor suddenly went to far clicking enter

Suddenly on the last page of my document the cursor jumped past where it
should go for a new paragraph and went to near the bottom of page. Pressing
backspace does not get it where it should have gone, to the next line. It
instead goes back to old line.

Check Page Setup > Layout > Vertical Alignment is set to Top.
