Opening files in Word 2003

Backed up all doc created with WORD 2000, upgraded OS to
XP pro also updated to WORD2003. Issue is that I can not
open many of my documents. Error message indicating that
I need to check "Permissions" , Text Recovery converter?
These are all documents that I created. Why can I not
open them in Word 2003?
